Dublin Bridge

University College Dublin
School of Nursing

Introduction

The UCD Health Sciences Summer School provides a challenging international educational experience in Dublin. Students on this program develop their knowledge of comparative health and nursing systems, as well as their skills in research for nursing practice. All students have the opportunity to work with an experienced researcher, with some students participating in one of Ireland's national research centers: the UCD Irish Centre for Nursing and Midwifery History and the National Centre for the Protection of Older People. Finally, through this program, students have the opportunity to integrate into Irish life and the rich culture of Dublin.

Academics & Curriculum

Participants take one course at the University College Dublin School of Nursing, Midwifery, & Health Systems:

Critical Appraisal of Research for Healthcare (10 Irish credits, the equivalent of NURS 403). Students attend class on campus in UCD in a combination of large group lectures and smaller group work sessions. During the third week of the course, students work autonomously to develop a portfolio of research evidence using a structured electronic workbook supplied with the course materials. Also during this third week, students attend two mentor-led group sessions in which they learn from their mentor’s experience and knowledge of an aspect of translating evidence into healthcare practice.

Students with room in their tracking sheet may wish to take a second course, "Health: A Systems Perspective", which can combine with the research course to fulfill a free elective requirement. Applicants should notify CUAbroad if they plan on taking the course, and should be aware that there will be additional tuition charges.
