Art & Museum Librarianship in the UK

Introduction

Explore art and museum librarianship through two of the world’s great centers of libraries, museums, archives, and cultural heritage. Based in London and Oxford, students will learn on site at institutions including the British Library, British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain, Bodleian Libraries, Ashmolean Museum, and other major cultural institutions with the aim of exploring how libraries and archives support the preservation, study, interpretation, and accessibility of cultural heritage. This program combines site visits, conversations with professionals, classroom discussions, readings, as well as reflective work, giving students an opportunity to examine art and museum librarianship in an international setting.

Academics

LSC 834: Art and Museum Librarianship in London and Oxford — 3 credits
This intensive study abroad course explores art and museum librarianship through the exceptional libraries, archives, museums, and cultural heritage institutions of London and Oxford. Students examine the missions, collections, services, and professional practices of art and museum libraries and archives through field visits and discussions with librarians, archivists, and curators at institutions.
