Barcelona

IES Abroad Barcelona Summer - Internship

Program Overview

Come let Barcelona enchant you. Whether it is the salty sea air, the sweep of mountains in the distance, or the romance and excitement of Las Ramblas, where else can you marvel at Gaudi's whimsical architectural genius while embracing the laid-back Spanish lifestyle? With great influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, and the arts, Barcelona has made its mark as a major player in the global market. Our program guarantees an internship placement to help you develop professional skills that will jump-start your résumé and make you more attractive to employers in today's competitive job market. IES Abroad's unpaid, academic internships have placed Barcelona students at companies such as Make-A-Wish Foundation, World Wildlife Fund, UNESCO, and the American Chamber of Commerce, while also showing students the sights and sounds of Spain.

Before you depart, we work with you to fine-tune your résumé, perfect your cover letter, hone your networking and interview skills, as well as prepare you for working in a new cultural environment. You'll be guaranteed a placement at a local business or organization, where you'll work for at least 25 hours a week. You also will enroll in a required 1- or 6-credit academic internship seminar with other IES Abroad interns, where you'll learn about a variety of local business settings and opportunities.

Academics & Curriculum

While working in Barcelona, students are required to enroll in a 6-credit academic internship seminar with other IES interns. Topics include:

  • Understanding business culture

  • Improving communication

  • Strengthening work attitude and aptitude

  • Resolving conflicts

  • Navigating issues, challenges, and opportunities to succeed on the job in Barcelona and when returning home

Students should consult with CUAbroad if they are considering the optional 3-credit Spanish language course taught in the IES Barcelona Center. Internships are available in the following fields: Accounting, Arts & Architecture, Business, Education/Language Instruction, Finance, Health, IT, Journalism, Law, Logistics, Marketing, Media & Communications, Not-for-Profit Volunteer Organizations, and Tourism.

Students interested in learning more about course offerings can find information here.

Accommodation & Meals

Program participants live with three-to-five other IES Abroad students in double rooms. Apartments have fully-equipped kitchens and meals are not provided. Live-in Spanish Assistants (RAs) help residents with cultural integration. Placements are limited.
