American University in Cairo
Introduction
Egypt is a unique, ancient, and wondrous destination that has much to offer its visitors. The Greater Cairo area has a population of 20 million people sprawled along the longest river in the world, the Nile. Encompassing the Pyramids of Giza, beautiful mosques and churches, as well as numerous museums, the Arab world’s most populous city is teeming with life. Explore the winding streets of Cairo will lead to a budding art and music scene, including cafes and coffee houses famous for their tea and backgammon. The dialect of Arabic spoken in Egypt is the most well known and most understood in the Arab world, making Egypt a prime language learning center in the Middle East.
Academics
Courses taught at the American University of Cairo are typically three credits and taught in English. Participants on this program should plan to enroll in 12-16 credits worth of courses (4-5 classes). The
schedule of classes includes instructor information, language of instruction, and course meeting times, but may not be available at the time of application. Instead, students should select several extra courses from the course catalog in case there are scheduling conflicts or other difficulties.
Housing Accommodation & Meals
Students live in single-sex, on-campus
university residences with other international and Egyptian students. Each residence building has a lounge, study room, courtyard, kitchenette, and terrace. Rooms come fully furnished, include heating and air conditioning, and have high speed wireless internet. The building is equipped to assist students with special needs, and overnight visitors are allowed on a space available basis.
In addition to having the ability to prepare food in their residence hall, students also have access to a number of
food outlets on campus. Most options are closed on Friday, but the main cafeteria is open 24/7.
