Valencia, Spain

Summer Global Health

Introduction

The Global Health program in Valencia, Spain is offered during the University of Virginia's summer session I. Participants complete the required course, Comparative Health Care Systems, and one Spanish course while simultaneously enjoying a variety of activities and experiences that expand students' knowledge of Spain and leaves upon them a lasting impression of Valencia's beauty. Included in the coursework are visits to local healthcare facilities.
 

Facilities

Students take classes in the two-story building owned by the University of Valencia, which is ideally situated adjacent to the University of Valencia. In addition to the classrooms, students can find faculty offices, a meeting hall, a library, a computer lab, and a canteen area all within the building. All participants are asked to make a pledge that only Spanish will be spoken inside the building.
 

Academics & Curriculum

Students on this program earn 6 credits. In additional to the English-taught "Comparative Health Care Systems" course, most students will be encouraged to take one of the following courses:

  • SPAN 2020-Advanced Intermediate Spanish Medical
  • SPAN 3050-Spanish for Medical Professionals

Students do have the option of selecting a different Spanish course from the summer offerings, a list of which can be found here.
 

Accommodation & Meals

All students stay with a host family while abroad in Valencia. Students can choose between doing a single homestay (one student) or a double (two students with one host family). Included in the homestay experience are three meals per day and laundry once a week. Internet is also guaranteed with every homestay though it may not be wireless.
