Description

After the fall of the infamous Wall in 1989 and the reunification of Germany a year later, Berlin has regained its status as capital of the country and has become a most dynamic European metropolis. Whatever you choose as your starting point for a stroll through contemporary Berlin - the iconic Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag's new glass dome, Potsdamer Platz or the Holocaust Memorial - you'll be following in the footsteps of famous history makers, musicians, and artists, in a city that's youthful and alive.

Participants study in the Berlin European Studies Program at the Freie Universität - one of Germany's premier institutions. Located in the southwestern part of Berlin, Freie Universität boasts a strong international community. A unique feature of this program is that students typically take content courses in English and prior study or knowledge of German is not required. Students travel on a week-long excursion within Germany and neighboring countries, in addition to local field trips and cultural events.
 

Accommodations

Students may choose between two housing options:

Homestays are encouraged as an unrivaled opportunity to improve your language and cultural skills, as well as a means of meeting people and becoming integrated into the city. Students who live in a homestay receive two meals a day included in the program cost.

Fully furnished studio apartments are located 30-40 minutes from the program site by bus. The apartments do not feature telephone or internet connections; a cost-effective wireless internet connection can be purchased directly by each participant at his/her own expense at a nearby office/shop, using information provided by the program. Meals are not included.
 

Academics

In addition to the required 1-2 German language courses, students take English-taught or German-taught courses in subjects such as art history, literature, European international relations, German history, German and European politics, architecture, philosophy, business, music history, and film studies.
