Theological Faculty of Trier Summer Program


Introduction

Trier, Germany is a World Heritage Site with Roman architecture (emperor Constantine lived in Trier), a medieval city center, wonderful churches, and a modern atmosphere. This video highlights some of the city's beauty. Students attending this program have access to the Archives and Library of the German Liturgical Institute as well as many other theological libraries. Included in the program are multiple study excursions, typically to Cologne (Largest Gothic Church in Northern Europe), Maria Laach (center of the Liturgical Movement in Germany), and Mainz (Gutenberg-Bible). Academics

Students on this program have the opportunity to earn 3 graduate credits for TRS 742C - “Understanding the Bible from the Liturgy”.

The course explores the rich relationships between Bible and liturgy. The first part examines liturgical elements within the OT and NT. The second part discusses the various ways in which liturgy uses Scripture (cf. SC 24). The course finally pays attention to systematic-theological dimensions of the liturgical hermeneutics of Scripture. The whole course promotes an interdisciplinary dialogue of liturgical and biblical studies and considers pastoral implications in the current challenges and opportunities for the Church.

The course and assigned readings for each class are in English.
 

Accommodation & Meals

Students on this program live in the St. Joseph Sisters Residence Hall, located in the city center of Trier. A park and hiking trails can all be found nearby. Each participant is given a single room with a private bath. Breakfast is provided daily. Students have access to numerous shops, markets, cafes, and restaurants for their other meals - many of which provide a student discount!
