Arcos Learning Abroad: Summer in Mexico

Introduction

Oaxaca is a fascinating colonial city surrounded by lush mountains and indigenous villages. It is an ideal location for Spanish language study and cultural immersion. Students find that the friendly people of Oaxaca possess an unmatched hospitality. Explore indigenous villages and stroll through colonial Oaxaca City with its welcoming plazas and inspiring architecture. Discover the ancient past of the pre-Hispanic cultures still alive today, such as the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs. This is the perfect destination to study abroad and explore a unique Latin American country.

Academics & Curriculum

Classes in Oaxaca are taught at the University of Oaxaca (UABJO), one of the first universities in Mexico. It is located in the historic center of Oaxaca only a few blocks south of the famous Zócalo, or central plaza. Class size ranges from around 3 to 5 students, and most classes are with other international students.  Course offerings include Spanish language, cultural electives, and public health. Options are available both in English and in Spanish. For a complete list of course offerings, visit the Arcos Academics website

Accommodations & Meals

While in Oaxaca, students live with host families. This immersive opportunity is perfect for students looking to learn about Mexican culture and improve their Spanish language abilities. Homestays are located just a short 10-15 minute walk from school in safe, middle-class neighborhoods. All meals are provided by the host family, giving students a unique opportunity to learn about Mexican food and culture. Wifi is available at home, and laundry is typically done off-site at a conveniently situated laundromat.
