Non-Affiliated Programs

To receive credit for study abroad, students must attend a program approved by The Catholic University of America Office of Education Abroad. Programs listed on the CUAbroad website are affiliated with The Catholic University of America and have been pre-approved as able to transfer credit. In rare cases, individual circumstances make it necessary for students to attend a non-affiliated program. In those cases, students must petition to have the program approved prior to going abroad.

Successful petitions must show that the requested program fulfills academic needs for the student that cannot otherwise be met by any of the affiliated program options. Petitions should be sent to cua-cuabroad@cua.edu and must contain the following three components:
  • Justification for the program
  • Relevant program information, including dates, courses, description, language of instruction, and URL.
In addition, a letter of support from a CUA faculty member or advisor may be requested. Approved programs must offer high quality academics, provide adequate student support, and meet CUA’s requirements for transfer credit. Once the petition has been received and reviewed, the Office of Education Abroad will communicate a decision to the student. If approved, the student should submit a Non-Affiliated Program application through the CUAbroad website.
